The Suffren submarine was officially launched
12 July 2019
The Suffren, the first in a series of new-generation nuclear attack submarines (SNA) (Barracuda program), was officially “launched” on July 12 in Cherbourg, in the presence of the President of the Republic, accompanied by the Minister of the Armed Forces. It was transferred from its assembly hall to the dry dock, where the final stages prior to sea trials will be carried out.
Overall project management for the Barracuda program is handled by the Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), while project management for the reactor room and nuclear cores is entrusted to the CEA. Construction management has been entrusted to the industrial contractors Naval Group and TechnicAtome. TechnicAtome is responsible for the design and construction of the nuclear propulsion reactors, their fuel cores, and their support systems (tools, training).
The reactor building designed by TechnicAtome incorporates the latest innovations to ensure even greater reactor availability, increased core power capacity, and even more comprehensive nuclear safety guarantees.
The Barracuda program has engaged TechnicAtome’s teams and industrial infrastructure for over ten years across all of its sites (Saclay, Cherbourg, Cadarache, Aix-en-Provence, Nantes, Toulon).
