BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES
A New Generation Dedicated to French Sovereignty
Nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines are based at Île Longue. Hidden in the ocean, undetectable, and armed with nuclear weapons, the four SSBNs ensure the continuity of nuclear deterrence, of which they constitute the ocean-based component.
OUR ROLE
4 onboard nuclear reactors
TechnicAtome is the prime contractor responsible for the design and construction of the nuclear reactors for the 4 submarines in the series. Building on the design of the K15-class reactor that power the second-generation SSBNs, the 3G SSBN project serve as a bridge between the lower-power reactor of the Barracuda project and the significantly more powerful K22 of the future nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
