TechnicAtome revealed the K22 reactor

5 February 2021

On Wednesday, February 3, during the 16th edition of Naval Science Day at the Naval Academy in Brest, TechnicAtome presented the propulsion system for the future aircraft carrier during a conference.

This educational science event for officer cadets was dedicated this year to nuclear propulsion and, more broadly, to carbon-free energy sources for the Navy. This topic is more relevant than ever, given, on the one hand, the delivery of the Suffren—the first ship of the Barracuda class—and, on the other hand, the President of the Republic’s announcement regarding the choice of nuclear propulsion for the future aircraft carrier. TechnicAtome, the designer of the shipboard nuclear power plants, was naturally invited to present its expertise in nuclear propulsion to the cadets. Gisèle DEMIRDJIAN, PA-Ng Project Manager, led a presentation on “The Challenges of the K22 Power Plant for the Next-Generation Aircraft Carrier.”

TechnicAtome’s presentation was praised by Admiral Baudonnière, Commandant of the Naval Academy, and once again this year helped strengthen the ties between our company and this institution. TechnicAtome regularly hosts cadets for their three-month end-of-studies internship.

Organized since 2006, the JSN brings together defense stakeholders, scientists, and industry representatives to raise students’ awareness of the challenges of research and innovation in the maritime and naval fields. The Naval Academy was able to maintain this event despite the health crisis by adapting its format.
